What Is Mohs Surgery?

MOHS micrographic surgery is a precise and successful technique for removing skin cancers. Performed by Dr. Michael Cohen and Dr. Sari Weinstein at South Nassau Dermatology in Levittown, NY, tissue-sparing MOHS Surgery gives people the efficiency, high cure rate and hope they deserve when faced with a skin cancer.

The statistics

By age 70, 20 percent of Americans will have gotten a skin cancer diagnosis, reports the Skin Cancer Foundation. These people face disfigurement and, with some cancers, metastasis to major body organs. Skin cancer threatens overall health, well-being and personal appearance.

MOHS Surgery

These facts concern your board-certified physicians at South Nassau Dermatology in Levittown, NY. They offer state of the art examination, diagnostic and treatment techniques for skin cancer, including MOHS Surgery. If you have skin cancer, this outstanding, less invasive technique may be right for you.

Performed by Dr. Michael Cohen and Dr. Sari Weinstein on an outpatient basis at South Nassau Dermatology, MOHS surgery features a high cure rate. Plus, it's performed under local anesthesia and spares a high degree of normal tissue surrounding the malignancy.

How it works

After your surgical site is prepped and numbed, your doctor will remove an ultra-thin slice of cancerous and normal tissue. Using a high-resolution microscope, he maps the sample to locate the margins between the malignant and benign portion of your skin. Then, Dr. Weinstein or Dr. Cohen continues to remove additional layers of only the suspected cancer, examining each layer until the biopsies prove to be free of cancer cells.

With each sample and biopsy, you will wait for your results. With the final benign result, the physician will close and reconstruct the site as needed (with a skin graft, for example). Then, you'll return home to heal.

Low recurrence

With MOHS surgery, your skin cancer likely will be gone for good, says the Skin Cancer Foundation. That's great news for our patients at South Nassau Dermatology.
