Laser Hair Removal

Our hair removal laser is among the safest and most effective systems in the world, with virtually no risk of scarring. We have treated hundreds of satisfied patients with this device. Most say it is easier than waxing.

The specific wavelength energy is used to penetrate the skin and damage the hair follicle. A direct cooling device in the laser is effective for long-term hair reduction without injury to the skin's surface. Lasers make it possible to treat larger areas such as the back, shoulders, arms and legs, as well as more sensitive areas such as the face and bikini line. It is also possible to remove hundreds of hairs at a time (as opposed to electrolysis, which works hair-by-hair.)

This safe, pain-free procedure can provide long-term results, with most patients needing three to five treatment in the first year. (Some hair follicles may enter their growth cycle after a treatment, so multiple sessions are required to deliver optimal results.) Any subsequent residual hair growth usually appears finer, shorter and lighter in color.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion improves mild to moderate sun damage, scarring, wrinkles and other superficial skin problems. A gentle stream of tiny particles exfoliates the outer layer of skin and provides a fresh, glowing, younger appearance. The particles scrape away the surface layer of aging or damaged skin, which is then brushed off with the microdermabrasion vacuum tool with no need for anesthesia. Only a small amount of skin is removed, so sensitive areas such as the face, chest, neck, arms and hands can be treated. Results are comparable to a light chemical peel and should be immediately visible.

Peels

Chemical peels remove damaged outer layers of skin on the face to smooth texture, reduce scarring, and remove blemishes and pre-cancerous growths to produce healthy, glowing skin. Peel formulas and strengths are tailored to each patient. Peels can be combined with other procedures such as facelifts for a younger look. They may be covered by insurance if they are performed for medical rather than cosmetic reasons.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is the standard treatment for spider veins of the legs. The procedure involves injecting a sclerosing solution through a tiny needle into the weakened vein, which then collapses and is absorbed by the body. By the end of the treatment program, the veins are less visible on the skin surface. Newer techniques used by the physicians at South Nassau Dermatology are less painful than previous sclerotherapy treatments and may involve fewer treatments.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Photo-Facial

The Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) photofacial treatment is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the U.S. It is a safe and easy way to reduce redness, fine lines and wrinkles, irregular pigmentation and large pores and generally improve the appearance of aging or damaged skin. Gentle pulses of laser light penetrate the skin and stimulate collagen production, softening and filling out the skin and fading pigmentation. The laser is set at specific wavelengths for each patient to get the best results. South Nassau Dermatology's Palomar Medilux IPL is an advanced system that allows short, virtually painless treatment sessions of only 15-30 minutes and visible results after three to five treatments.

BLU-U Light Treatment for Acne

South Nassau Dermatology is one of the few practices on Long Island to offer BLU-U Light Photodynamic therapy. The blue light kills the bacteria P. acnes that live in the clogged follicles of acne patients and causes pimples. Patients simply sit in front of the blue-light machine for about sixteen minutes, twice a week for one month. If solution called ALA or Levulan® is given along with the BLU-U Light, patients may need only three treatments spaced three to four weeks apart. Most patients experience a reduction in the severity of their acne and the number of pustules, comedones and papules that is often long term.

Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a special treatment performed with a topical photosensitizing agent called ALA or Levulan activated with the correct wavelength of light, either BLU-U light, V-beam laser, or Intense Pulsed Light. These treatments remove sundamaged precancerous zones and spots called actinic keratoses. Sun damage, fine lines, and blotchy pigmenation are also improved. PDT also treats acne, rosacea, and acne scars.

Pathology Services

South Nassau Dermatology has is its own dermatopathologist on staff in Dr. Martin Reichel, who serves on the faculty at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons. Unless your insurance contracts with a particular laboratory, all of the biopsies at South Nassau Dermatolgy are read by our own in-office Board-certified dermatopathogist and processed in our own laboratory.

Latest Biologic Treatments for Psoriasis

More than 4 million Americans live with the discomfort of psoriasis, a condition in which skin cells grow faster than they are shed, resulting in itchy, thick, scaly or discolored patches. There is no cure for psoriasis at this time, but we are learning more about what causes it. At South Nassau Dermatology we are proud to offer one of the newest and most promising treatment methods: biologic therapy. Biologic treatments, or "biologics," target cells in the immune system (called T-cells) which produce chemical signals (called cytokines) that "tell" the skin to grow too quickly. Biologics block the production of T-cells so those signals aren't sent, resulting in an improvement in psoriasis symptoms.

We offer FDA-approved biologic treatments called Raptiva®, Enbrel, and Amevive. Patients give themselves an injection at home once or twice a week. Results are usually seen within the first six weeks, with significant improvement by two to three months.
